Sarah Jones is the film producer behind the company Something Else Productions Inc. She is an award-winning filmmaker who creates documentary and experimental films that weave together contemporary dance and stories of connection and belonging—to ourselves, to others, and to the environments we inhabit.
As a member of the disabled, neurodiverse, 2SLGBTQ+, and contemporary dance communities, Sarah brings an authentic and inclusive perspective to her storytelling. Their work explores the intersections of art, identity, and community, through collaborations with dancers and artists from diverse lived experiences.
Their debut film, Contested Landscapes, examines urban development within the protected lands of the Oak Ridges Moraine and earned the Audience Choice Award at the Contact Dance International Film Festival (CDIFF) in 2017. In 2021, she released her first feature-length documentary, Dovercourt House: A Home for Dance, which captures nearly 30 voices from Toronto’s contemporary and social dance communities reflecting on a space that many refer to as their second home.
Her 2023 short series, The Toronto Contact Improvisation Community, shares the dance origin stories of eight artists and won both the Gold Award and the Audience Choice Award at CDIFF.
Sarah’s 2024 short film be.yond introduces the artistic practice of Frank Hull, a choreographer who proudly lives with cerebral palsy and madness. Officially selected by three film festivals, be.yond received the Bronze Award at CDIFF and serves as a proof of concept for Own Kind of Beautiful—a forthcoming project following Frank and his best friend Marcie as they reimagine past choreography to reflect Marcie’s evolving relationship with her mobility devices.
